After a three-year hiatus, Formula 1 returned to the iconic Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada, for the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix. The race lived up to its billing as one of the most exciting of the season, with Max Verstappen holding off a late charge from Carlos Sainz to claim victory.
Verstappen, who started from pole position, controlled the race from the outset. However, Sainz, who started from third, put him under constant pressure throughout the 70-lap race. The Spaniard closed the gap on several occasions, but Verstappen always had an answer.
Verstappen's Late Charge
With just 10 laps to go, Sainz finally found a way past Verstappen. However, the Dutchman responded immediately, retaking the lead just two laps later. Sainz continued to push, but Verstappen refused to be denied his fifth win of the season.
The victory extends Verstappen's lead in the drivers' standings to 46 points over Sergio Perez. Sainz's second place finish is his best result of the season, while Lewis Hamilton rounded out the podium for Mercedes.
