A History of the Iconic Statue

Christ the Redeemer, the iconic Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ, stands atop Mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Completed in 1931, the statue has become a symbol of the city and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

The Construction of a Masterpiece

The statue was the brainchild of Catholic archbishop SebastiĆ£o Leme da Silveira Cintra and was designed by French sculptor Paul Landowski. The construction, supervised by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, took nine years to complete.
