**Billions of Insects Set to Emerge

April 29, 2024 (CBS News) - Get ready for the sound of cicadas this spring, as trillions of the periodical insects are set to emerge from the ground in multiple states. This double-brood event, a rare occurrence that hasn't happened in over 200 years, will bring with it the characteristic buzzing and molting of these fascinating creatures.
Two separate broods of cicadas, one with a 13-year cycle (Brood XIX) and the other with a 17-year cycle (Brood XIII), will emerge this year. Brood XIX is expected to appear in Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and parts of Tennessee and Illinois.
Brood XIII, which emerged in 2019, will re-emerge in several Southern states, including Georgia, Mississippi, and North Carolina. The map below provides an interactive guide to the areas where these broods are expected to appear.
While cicadas do not pose a direct threat to humans or animals, their loud mating calls can be overwhelming. Prepare for the invasion by considering ear protection or taking measures to reduce noise.
